Has Christianity Been Hijacked by Prosperity Gospel?

In our rapidly evolving society, the very essence of Christianity seems to be under threat. A worrisome trend has emerged where secularism has stealthily infiltrated the Church, leading to the rise of prosperity Gospel. This new form of Gospel is a stark deviation from the core teachings of Christ, with ministers shifting their focus to material wealth and prosperity. It paints a picture of Christianity that seems overly focused on the worldly, rather than the spiritual. These prosperity teachers, in their quest for earthly riches, seem to have lost sight of the actual mission of Jesus Christ.

The Bible is unambiguous about the mission of Christ. He was sent to deliver humanity from the bondage of sin, a salvation that is received through faith alone in Jesus Christ alone. The Gospel according to John clearly states, "For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him" (John 3:17). The focus of our faith, therefore, should be on the salvation offered through Jesus Christ, not on material wealth or prosperity.

Unfortunately, the prosperity Gospel erroneously emphasizes that Christ has come to deliver us from all forms of illness, distress, and financial hardship. This interpretation is far removed from the teachings of Christ himself. Jesus said, "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me" (Matthew 16:24). This statement clearly indicates that following Christ may involve hardships and difficulties, a point that is often glossed over by prosperity Gospel preachers.

Even Jesus, the Son of God, faced temptations and trials. Indeed, Jesus "... humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!" as Paul writes in Philippians (Philippians 2:8). The apostles too faced numerous hardships, challenges, and trials, and yet they remained steadfast in their faith, underscoring the reality that faith does not guarantee an easy life.

The miracles of healing performed by Jesus were not His primary mission. They served to authenticate His mission and demonstrate His divine nature. But these miracles are sometimes misconstrued by prosperity Gospel preachers as a guarantee of an easy life for believers. This is a dangerous distortion of the Gospel message, as it diverts the focus from the spiritual to the physical.

It is important to remember that the Bible does not promise an easy life for believers. On the contrary, it warns of trials and tribulations. Jesus stated, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). This is a clear warning that believers will face challenges and difficulties, a far cry from the misleading promise of an easy life propagated by the prosperity Gospel.

In these end times, it is crucial for believers to remain vigilant and discerning to the apostasy infiltrating the Church. The prosperity Gospel, with its focus on earthly riches, is a clear sign of this apostasy. The Bible warns in 2 Timothy 4:3-4, "For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths."

As we navigate these challenging times, let us keep our focus on the true message of the Gospel. It is vital to remember that the true Gospel does not promise earthly wealth but offers eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ. As such, the prosperity Gospel and its focus on worldly wealth is a dangerous deviation that must be rejected.

Finally, a word of warning to all Christians: the rapture is near, but who is ready for it? As we look forward to Christ's second coming, let us not be deceived by false teachings that promise earthly wealth. Instead, let us focus on the true Gospel, which promises eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ. Let us stay vigilant, keeping our faith strong and our hearts ready for the return of our Saviour.
