What is the Significance of the Marriage Supper of the Lamb According to Revelation 19:7-10?

John's mystical vision in Revelation 19:7-10 presents the 'marriage supper of the Lamb', a concept that can be better understood by considering the marriage customs prevalent during Jesus Christ's time.

These customs had three main stages. The first stage involved the negotiation and signing of a marriage contract by the parents of both the bride and groom. At this stage, the groom or his parents would offer a dowry to the bride or her family. This marked the beginning of the betrothal period, similar to the modern-day concept of engagement. The engagement period of Joseph and Mary (Matthew 1:18; Luke 2:5) serves as an example of this stage in biblical terms.

The second stage typically occurred much later, when the groom, accompanied by his friends, would go to the bride's house. This event often took place at night, characterized by a torchlight procession through the streets. The bride and her maidens, having prepared for this event, would join the parade and finally reach the groom's home. The parable of the ten virgins in Matthew 25:1–13 illustrates this custom.

The third and final phase was the wedding feast, which could last several days, as demonstrated by the wedding at Cana in John 2:1–2. This imagery of a wedding feast symbolizes the intimate union between Christ (the Groom) and His Church (the Bride).

John's vision in Revelation depicts the wedding feast of the Lamb (Jesus Christ) and his bride (the Church), symbolizing the final phase. The narrative suggests that the first two stages have already taken place. Individual believers professing faith in Christ as their Savior fulfilled the initial phase on earth. The dowry, paid by God the Father, can be seen as symbolic of the blood of Christ, shed for the Church. Thus, the Church on earth is currently 'betrothed' to Christ.

In the context of this metaphor, the Holy Spirit is offered as a down payment or "deposit," "seal," and "earnest" within the hearts of Christians (Ephesians 1:13-14). This represents God's commitment during the betrothal phase, demonstrating God's claim on His people, signifying their belongingness to Him.

Believers should emulate the wise virgins in the parable by staying vigilant and prepared for the return of the Bridegroom (the rapture). This second phase symbolizes the rapture of the Church, when Christ claims His bride and brings her to the Father's house.

The marriage supper follows as the final step. It is believed that the marriage supper of the Lamb takes place in heaven between the rapture and the second coming (during the tribulation on earth). Attendees at the wedding feast will include not only the Church, as the Bride of Christ, but also the Old Testament saints. As the angel instructed John to record, “Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb” (Revelation 19:9). The marriage supper of the Lamb is indeed a grand celebration for all who are in Christ!
