Is Modern Technology Eroding Our Values and Intellect?

In today's rapidly evolving world, the advent of technology and the adoption of new cultural norms have significantly transformed how we live, communicate, and express ourselves. One notable trend is the erosion of privacy dominated by public sharing of personal affairs, which was once against many cultures. The question arises: Are these changes indicative of a loss of values or a decline in intellect? Or is there a deeper, more insidious influence at play, such as the manipulation of trends by a worldly hierarchy, potentially paving the way for a new world order?

The trend of sharing what was traditionally considered private has extended beyond normal acceptable limits. Today, it is not surprising to see individuals sharing intimate details of their lives on social media. For instance, it is becoming common to see a bride posting pictures from inside the couple's private room, revealing their bed and personal space, before even wedding participants arrive at their homes. Similarly, people frequently share images of their meals, inviting the public into what was once a personal moment. Such behaviors raise critical questions about the loss of privacy and the underlying motivations behind these public displays. Are these acts truly for the glory of God, or are they driven by a desire for social validation and approval? The Bible teaches us to guard our private lives and to be cautious about what we share with the world. Proverbs 25:9 states, "When arguing with your neighbor, don't betray another person's secret." This verse underscores the importance of maintaining privacy and discretion.

Another example concerns the shift from Privacy to Public Display of Pregnancy. Traditionally, pregnancy was a private and sacred experience, often kept within the confines of family and close friends. Today, it has become commonplace to see expectant mothers sharing their pregnancy journeys on social media, complete with pictures of their growing bellies, often with their husbands proudly touching them. This shift raises important questions about our evolving values and intellect. The Bible emphasizes the importance of modesty and discretion. Proverbs 11:22 states, "Like a gold ring in a pig's snout is a beautiful woman who shows no discretion." The public display of pregnancy, once considered a deeply personal and private experience, now often seeks validation and attention from the broader online community. This shift may reflect a broader trend towards seeking external validation rather than valuing the intimate and sacred nature of certain life events.

Another noticeable trend in the age of social media is the public expression of gratitude and affection. It is now common to see people writing romantic words to their spouses or expressing gratitude to loved ones, even housemates, on platforms like Facebook, rather than conveying these sentiments privately within the home. While expressing love and gratitude is undeniably important, the shift towards public declarations can sometimes appear performative rather than genuine. The Bible encourages us to express love and gratitude sincerely. Colossians 3:17 advises, "And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him." True gratitude and affection are best expressed through actions and private moments that reflect genuine appreciation, rather than public displays that may seek external approval. Matthew 6:1-4 provides valuable guidance on this matter: "Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you." This passage emphasizes the importance of sincerity and humility in our actions, reminding us that true virtue is not about seeking public recognition but about genuine, heartfelt acts of love and gratitude.

Perhaps the most noticeable and concerning trend is the increasing homogenization of cultures. As technology bridges geographical gaps, unique cultural practices are often replaced by more universally accepted norms. The adoption of common words, symbols, and behaviors can erode the richness of individual cultures, leading to a loss of diversity and identity. The Bible speaks to the value of diversity and the beauty of different cultures. Revelation 7:9 describes a vision of "a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people, and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb." This biblical diversity celebrates the unique aspects of God’s creation, but it is distinct from modern diversity and inclusion movements, which often promote pluralistic views of God and LGBT ideologies. The homogenization of culture might be contrary to God's design for humanity, as true biblical diversity reflects the unity and diversity within the body of Christ.

Importantly, global trends are believed to be orchestrated, influenced and controlled by worldly hierarchies who manipulate global trends for the New World Order. This influence can be seen in how cultural shifts often align with the interests of powerful entities. The widespread adoption of certain behaviors and symbols can subtly condition societies to accept new norms and ideologies, potentially undermining traditional values. Ephesians 6:12 reminds us, "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." This verse highlights the spiritual battle behind worldly influences, suggesting that the erosion of values may be part of a larger, more sinister plan.

The fundamental question remains: Is this shift indicative of a loss of values or a decline in intellect? The answer is likely a combination of both. As societies become more connected and influenced by technology, traditional values may be sacrificed for the sake of convenience and modernity. Additionally, the constant bombardment of information can overwhelm our intellect, leading to superficial engagement rather than deep, meaningful thought. Romans 12:2 advises, "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will." This verse calls us to resist conforming to worldly patterns and instead seek transformation through a renewed mind, grounded in God's truth and wisdom.

Sadly, even within the Christian community, there is a tendency to adopt and mimic behaviors seen on the internet and social media. This trend often led to the introduction of secular practices into religious contexts, potentially diluting the sacredness and authenticity of worship and fellowship. Churches may find themselves grappling with the challenge of maintaining doctrinal purity and traditional values in the face of modern influences. 1 Peter 2:9 reminds us of our distinct identity: "But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light." As Christians, we are called to be set apart, to live in a manner that reflects our calling and identity in Christ. This includes being discerning about the practices and trends we adopt, ensuring they align with biblical principles and glorify God.

Ultimately, the purpose behind what we share on social media and in public forums is a reflection of our hearts and values. Are our actions motivated by a desire to glorify God, or are they driven by the pursuit of social validation and approval? Colossians 3:23-24 instructs us, "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving." By keeping our focus on serving and glorifying God in all aspects of our lives, we can navigate the complexities of modern culture with integrity and wisdom. We can choose to share what is edifying and reflective of our faith, while maintaining the sacredness of personal and intimate moments.

In conclusion, the technological adoption and cultural shifts we witness today present both opportunities and challenges. While technology can connect and inform us, it can also erode traditional values and intellectual depth if not approached with discernment. As Christians, we must navigate these changes with a firm grounding in biblical principles, seeking to uphold the sacredness of personal experiences, celebrate cultural diversity, and remain vigilant against the influences of worldly hierarchies. By doing so, we can ensure that our values and intellect remain intact, rooted in the eternal truth of God's Word. As we engage with the modern world, let us remember the wisdom of Proverbs 4:23, "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it." May we guard our hearts and minds, allowing God's wisdom to guide us in an ever-changing world, and may our expressions of love and gratitude always be sincere, heartfelt, and reflective of our true values. In a time where privacy is often sacrificed for public display, where personal moments are broadcast for the world to see, and where cultural and religious practices are increasingly influenced by secular trends, let us commit to living lives that honor God. Let us be discerning about what we share, mindful of the impact it has on our values and intellect, and dedicated to maintaining the integrity of our faith in all that we do.
